Treating Migraines Holistically

Migraines vs. Headaches: Understanding the Difference

Migraines are often mistaken for regular headaches, but they are far more complex. Unlike common headaches, migraines are a neurological disorder involving nerve pathways and chemical imbalances in the brain. They also cause additional symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, extreme fatigue, and heightened sensitivity to light, sound, or smells. These symptoms arise from changes in brain activity and surrounding tissues, making them much more debilitating than typical headaches.

The Four Phases

Migraines progress through four distinct phases, each presenting different symptoms:

  1. Prodrome (Pre-Headache Phase) – This phase can begin hours or even days before the migraine. Symptoms often include mood swings, fatigue, food cravings, or difficulty concentrating.
  2. Aura – Some individuals experience visual, sensory, or speech disturbances, such as flashing lights, numbness, or slurred speech.
  3. Headache – Pain begins, often accompanied by worsening sensory sensitivities. The headache may last from hours to several days.
  4. Postdrome (Recovery Phase) – After the pain subsides, individuals often feel drained, disoriented, or mentally foggy.
What Causes Migraines?

While the direct cause of migraines has been something debated, it can be agreed that it is caused by improper neurological function. When trying to address the root of the problem it is vital to check the Autonomic nervous system, brainstem and thalamic/hypothalamic system. The autonomic system is in charge of regulating body functions such as hear rate, blood pressure and breathing. The brainstem is also very important as it is responsible for eye movements, head and facial pain modulation. Lastly, the thalamic/ hypothalamic area is responsible for integrating sensory information. These three systems are usually the culprits of migraines. A disfunction in one or various parts of these systems can result in varying levels of migraines.

Jang

Jang was born in Incheon, South Korea, and moved to the U.S. when he was one year old. He was raised in Morgan Hill, and from a young age, he knew that helping others made him happy. At 12, he began volunteering in various capacities, including preparing food, cleaning trash, assisting with after-school activities, and more. However, it wasn’t until he took his first actual science course in high school at age 14 that he developed a passion for science.

Combining his love for helping others with his interest in science, Jang attended the University of California, Davis, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior (NPB). His time there cemented his passion for healthcare. Since graduating, he has worked at various clinics, hoping to gain as much knowledge and experience as possible to positively impact people’s lives.

Initially, Jang aspired to become a Physician Assistant. After working at Norcal Brain Center for a year and witnessing its profound impact on patients, he hopes to become a clinical neurologist one day.

He enjoys working out, spending time outdoors, and exploring new restaurants with friends and family in his free time.
